Last week, the women played their first 1000-level tournament of the year on the hard courts of Doha, Qatar while the men played on 3 surfaces in 3 continents – the red clay of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the outdoor hard courts of Delray Beach, Florida, and the indoor hard courts of Marseille, France.

One Incredible Moment
This was a very eventful week. We had 6 choices of headlines, which we will list at the end, but our incredible moment is Amanda Anisimova winning the title in Doha. The 23-year-old is a former prodigy, reaching the 2019 Roland Garros semifinals at just 17 years old. Since then, her career has been plagued by injuries, both physical and mental. She took the second half of 2023 off to deal with burnout and mental health issues. After recovering – and taking up painting – she finally makes her top-20 debut.

After all she has been through at such a young age, Anisimova collapsing to the court after her first 1000-level title was an incredible moment, both for her and for tennis fans everywhere.
Other notable headlines:
- Jannik Sinner settles his doping case with WADA
- Joao Lucas Reis da Silva used the qualifying wild card he won in December, becoming the first openly gay player to compete in an ATP Tour tournament
- Diego Schwartzman retires in Buenos Aires
- Joao Fonseca becomes the first player born in 2006 or later to reach an ATP Tour semifinal – and wins the title
- Elena Rybakina’s coach, Stefano Vukov, has his suspension upheld by the WTA
- The draw of the Brazzaville Challenger disintegrates
The Week Ahead
The ATP Tour is still playing simultaneously on multiple surfaces. The South American clay court “Golden Swing” continues in Rio de Janeiro, the first home tournament for Joao Fonseca since his star turn late last year. The rest of the tour follows the women in Doha, where Novak Djokovic is playing doubles with a retiring Fernando Verdasco. The WTA Tour finishes up its Middle East swing in Dubai. Moving from Doha to Dubai is a drastic change in both conditions (it rained in Doha!) and court speed with only a day or two between tournaments. So, it makes sense that both of last week’s Doha finalists already lost in the first round in Dubai.
